Peace Bell in Montreal to ring 78 times to mark anniversary of Hiroshima bombing today
Today the Japanese Garden at Botanical Gardens in Montreal is commemorating the anniversary of the bombing of Hiroshima on Aug. 6, 1945 by ringing the Peace Bell 78 times — marking the number of years since the event. Mayor Valérie Plante shared a message about today’s commemoration, citing the “horror and indignation” of the bombing, which “shattered tens of thousands of lives” in Hiroshima, a sister city of Montreal.

“On Aug. 6, 1945, the atomic bomb fell on Hiroshima, sister city of Montreal, causing horror and indignation. Today, the Japanese Garden Peace Bell in the Botanical Garden will ring 78 times in memory of the tens of thousands of lives shattered in this tragedy. This bell reminds us that we must unite in order to build lasting peace in the world.”
